Kiss of Midnight ~ Lara Adrian

This is the first book in the Midnight Breed series.

This a series of vampire books, with a new (to me) twist on the vampire phenomenon. They are decendants of aliens, who crash landed on this planet long ago. All vampires are male, and must drink the blood of humans to survive, though they can go into blood addiction, known as bloodlust, and then they become the violent, basically evil vampire that is so well known to humans. They can only breed with a certian type of human, one who is born with a specific chemistry that allows them to be somewhat immune to vampire abilities.

Gabrielle is an orphan, raised in the foster system, who has never fit in. She has a few close friends, but she always feels out of place, and never knew why. She is a photographer, and has taken pictures of things she is not sure why she takes them, she just feels drawn to them. After going to a night club with her friends to celebrate a successful showing of her photographs, Gabby finds herself the witness to a brutal murder, one that no one believes her about. The police can find no sign of the carnage, and no witnesses at the scene.  Gabby starts to think she is loosing her mind.

Until Lucan shows up at her door. He claims to be a police detective, and needs to see the photos she took with her phone of the incident. Some how Gabby feels drawn to him, like no one ever before. Can Lucan help her figure out exactly what is happening to her?
