The Darkest Evening of the Year ~ Dean Koontz
This book tells the tale of Amy Redwing, the founder of Golden Heart, a rescue for Golden Retrievers, and Brian McCarthy, the architect she is dating. They encounter a Retriever who seems to be more than just a dog, and follow their pasts and the histories that haunt them both, to their future.
This is not a bad book, but was way, way too focused on the dogs to suit me. I pick up Koontz for a thriller/suspense novel, not a homage to Golden Retrievers, if there hadn’t been long detours about the dogs and the breed, this would have been a really great book.
Into the Fire ~ Suzanne Brockmann
This is book number Thirteen in the Troubleshooters series.
We revisit Vihn Murphy, who’s wife Angelina, was killed in a Hot Target. We see how he has spent the time between then and now, mostly in a drunken haze, missing Angelina and wanting to kill the man he sees as responsible for her death. He periodically goes back to see his friend, and Angelina’s best friend Hannah, who becomes worried about his state of mind and goes to Troubleshooters to see if they can help find him.
When the man believed to be responsible for her death shows up dead himself, even the FBI is on the hunt for Murphy, thinking that he may be responsible.
We also get another look at Izzy Zanella, (who hopefully will get his own book soon, Hint, Hint,) as he becomes entangeled in a young woman who walks into the Ladybug looking for one of his teammates.
