This is the second book in the Anita Blake series.

After killing the previous Master of the City, Anita now has to deal with Jean-Claude as the Master, but can she deal with him without killing him? As a string of bloody murders occurs, Anita is called in by the police for help finding the culprit, a zombie. Anita’s never encountered a zombie like  this before, and she’s not sure if she can help. At the same time she’s being hounded by Harold Gaynor to raise an almost three hundred year old zombie, she’s refusing because it will require a human sacrifice, but Harold’s not taking no for an answer.

Anita is asked to investigate a series of killings by the local vampires, but since it’s her policy never to work for the vampires she turns the job down. Instead they blackmail her into doing it, by threatening her friends. In the course of her investigation Anita meets some terrifying vampires. Nicolaos, who’s over a thousand years old, is the Master of the City and the vamp that most scares Anita, but Anita knows that once the case is over she’ll also have others to deal with, if they survive. Can Anita solve the crimes and manage to stay alive once she’s done so?
